When using wooden blocks or copperplates, the oil-based ink is applied to the printmaking surface using printmaking rollers.
There are two types : leather and synthetic rubber rollers. There are two types of leather rollers: those made from suede and those made from nubuck. The suede rollers are used to make printing surfaces, while the nubuck and synthetic rubber ones are used for printing. There are many types of rubber rollers. One type is for lithographs; the other is for multicolored copperplate printing. Two types of rubber rollers (one hard and one soft) can be used to make impressions during printing. To ensure that the rollers spin smoothly, tegawa (a curled piece of leather) must be covered on both sides of the axle. Rubber rollers can be used with bare hands, but tegawa is sometimes not necessary.

Different roller types require different care. The leather rollers are not meant to be used immediately. To adjust the ink's viscosity, first apply viscous varnish and then linseed oils to the ink slab. Finally, roll the roller on the surface to coat it with varnish. Once the ink slab has been mixed, the roller can be used. You can store suede rollers by wrapping them in cellophane. However, you should scrape off any accumulations of ink on the leather surface from time to time with an ink spatula.
This will remove any old ink or other debris from the roller's surface. Nubuck and rubber rollers must be thoroughly cleaned with a solvent (mineral spirits, print cleaner for rubber) and no paint thinner. Ink may not adhere to a roller's surface if it becomes glazed or hardens over time. Professionals should professionally resurface the roller.
You can buy rollers from shops that specialize in them or art supply stores that deal with printmaking supplies.
